What will the world be like, the day after Tomorrow, for the lonely ones who will have talents that others will half fear, half envy? William Gerken describes this strange world in which young and old will have to find new values and pursue new dreams, as they search for the answer.... When he opened the door to the shed that day, and saw the axe suspended in mid-air, he understood what was wrong.

A few of us on the John P. Marquand forum ended up reading this William Gerken short story “Stopover”. Maybe because I had read it before in a sci fi anthology and knew its context, I was the only one of three who liked it. So when my friend christopher wrote a critical review, I had to write a positive. :) (I want to make it clear that this review is for the free kindle Project Guttenberg edition. Amazon does have a tendency to link these P. G. books with no ISBN number to other editions.)

Originally published in 1957 in “Fantastic Universe” magazine, I think that “Stopover” is a good example of the short, “pulp” science fiction often found in magazines of the time. While the pulps did produce some outstanding stories from greats like Asimov and Pohl, that was the exception rather than the rule. By and large they were short stories like this produced by lesser writers for a few cents a word.

“Stopover” is a very short story that captures the mood of the ‘50s with both fear of the “bomb” and an innocence not found today. But it also does what makes science fiction great- presenting a world view that contrasts sharply with the status quo of the time.

Is “Stopover” great? Nah. But it is a nice little example of pulp sci fi. If you set your expectations accordingly, you will probably enjoy it. I found a picture of the original magazine cover. It will give you an idea of what to expect :)

Stopover Unabridged Start Classics eBook William Gerken Reviews

Publication date 1957- a short story much anthologized in the early 1960s (a reliable source tells me)

Here is a vision of post-apocalyptic America

We went up the back steps and through the door into the kitchen.
"Go on, show Marty," I said, taking off my jacket.
He looked at me to make sure I meant it. Then he raised the coffee pot from the stove, and watched it move across the room under its own power to the table where I was sitting. Leaving the pot in mid-air, he made the cupboard open, and still standing in the middle of the room, floated three cups and saucers to the table. Then he got the cream, sugar and three spoons, put them on the table, and poured the coffee.

My jaw dropped in amazement reading this scene. Because of the telekinetic powers? Hardly. But apparently this 'stopover' town, cut off from the outside world except for the occasional wayfaring stranger, still manages to get coffee, cream, and sugar.

This story could only be considered good if Mr. Gerken was 12 or younger when he wrote it, which for all I know is the case here. The atomic war has made the survivors so weary of conflict, apparently, that they don't even have it in their stories.

He turned to Tommy. "Would you like to learn how to do things, Tommy?"
"Sure. Like what?"
He glanced at Marty and me. "Like making the world a better place to live."

Now, I can imagine an unwritten STOPOVER II THE RECKONING, in which the wayfarer returns to the town where he taught all the kids telekinesis, telepathy, and foreknowledge, only to find that the special kids have taken over, or stopped working, or better yet, that the normals have expelled them for the good of the whole, or something... None of that is in the story as is, and the only irony is unintentional

"We all know we've been slowly slipping into retrogression ever since '63. None of us like it, but there isn't anything we can do to halt it—yet. We don't want our children, or their children, to keep slipping backwards. If we don't stop it in our lifetime, we may not be able to stop it at all."

Sweet innocence.
